Pregnancy protein needs supplementation    by Riza C. Belgira

If you feel that you have significant weight loss, severe fluid retention, Muscle fatigue and frequent infections, you may suspect that you are lacking in protein. Protein is one of the most essential nutrients that the body needs. It has amino acids that form the building blocks for the development of tissues and the muscles. Since it is very important to the growth and development, this will justify its increased importance during pregnancy.

A woman’s daily protein requirement is about 45 to 50 grams. During pregnancy, to be able to meet the nutritional needs of the baby in the womb, protein intake should increase by 25 grams or about 70 to 75 grams per day. Lack of protein can result to the above mentioned symptoms and also can affect the development of the baby causing low birth weight and early childbirth.

It is vital that the protein needs are met sufficiently especially during the second and the third trimester of pregnancy. It is during this interval that the baby climaxes its growth and development.

Getting the additional 25 grams of protein per day during pregnancy should never be an issue. There are several protein sources that you can choose from and will definitely fit your meal plan. Common sources of protein are chicken, beef and pork, seafood such as crabs and shrimps. Fish is also an excellent source of protein. Yet certain kinds of fish like predator type of fish may not be safe for consumption during pregnancy. It is believed that this type of fish contains high level of mercury metal that is harmful to health with regards to the developing child.

Aside from playing an important role in the development of the baby, having enough protein saves you from frequent morning sickness and nausea. Some expectant moms practice eating peanut butter in the morning to get relief from morning sickness and nausea.

If you want further information on how to meet your protein needs, you should consult your physician. He can recommend to you supplementation or a meal plan that would fit your nutritional needs during pregnancy. It is best to stick to natural protein sources. Additionally, they are much way cheaper plus you get to enjoy the food that you eat.

Protein Crystallization

Protein Crystallization

$63.77

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Proteins, like many molecules, can be prompted to form crystals when placed in the appropriate conditions. In order to crystallize a protein, the purified protein undergoes slow precipitation from an aqueous solution. As a result, individual protein molecules align themselves in a repeating series of unit cells by adopting a consistent orientation. The crystalline lattice that forms is held together by noncovalent interactions. The importance of protein crystallization is that it serves as the basis for X-ray crystallography, wherein a crystallized protein is used to determine the protein’s three-dimensional structure via X-ray diffraction. In 1934, John Desmond Bernal and his student Dorothy Hodgkin discovered that protein crystals surrounded by their mother liquor gave better diffraction patterns than dried crystals. Using pepsin, they were the first to discern the diffraction pattern of a wet, globular protein.

Protein C

Protein C

$76.47

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Protein C, also known as autoprothrombin IIA and blood coagulation factor XIV, is an inactive protein, the activated form of which plays an important role in managing blood clotting, inflammation, cell death and the permeability of blood vessel walls in humans and other animals. Activated protein C (APC) performs these operations primarily by inactivating proteins Factor Va and Factor VIIIa:35 In humans, protein C is encoded by the PROC gene. The inactive, or zymogenic form of protein C is a vitamin Kdependent protein (EC 3.4.21.69) which circulates in blood plasma. Its structure is that of a twochain polypeptide consisting of a light chain and a heavy chain connected by a disulfide bond:4673 The protein C zymogen is activated when it binds to thrombin, another protein heavily involved in coagulation, and protein Cs activation is greatly promoted by the presence of thrombomodulin and endothelial protein C receptors (EPCRs). Because of EPCRs role, activated protein C is primarily found near endothelial cells (i.e. those that make up the walls of blood vessels), and it these cells and leukocytes (white blood cells) that APC affects. Protein Subunit

Protein Subunit

$68.51

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In structural biology, a protein subunit or subunit protein is a single protein molecule that assembles (or coassembles ) with other protein molecules to form a protein complex: a multimeric or oligomeric protein. Many naturallyoccurring proteins and enzymes are multimeric. Examples include: oligomeric: hemoglobin, DNA polymerase, nucleosomes and multimeric: ion channels, microtubules and other cytoskeleton proteins. The subunits of a multimeric protein may be identical, homologous or totally dissimilar and dedicated to disparate tasks. In some protein assemblies, one subunit may be referred to as a regulatory subunit and another as a catalytic subunit. An enzyme composed of both regulatory and catalytic subunits when assembled is often referred to as a holoenzyme. One subunit is made of one polypeptide chain. A polypeptide chain has one gene coding for it meaning that a protein must have one gene for each unique subunit. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Protein Homeostasis

Protein Homeostasis

$145.99

Proper expression, folding, transport, and clearance of proteins is critical for cell function. Chaperones and enzymes that posttranslationally assist newly synthesized proteins help ensure that they fold correctly or are degraded. Translocation machineries, proteasomes, and autophagic activities help to localize and degrade proteins as necessary. Stress and aging can cause such mechanisms to become dysfunctional or overloaded, resulting in the accumulation and aggregation of misfolded proteins a feature of numerous neurodegenerative conditions. Written and edited by experts in the field, this volume covers the entire spectrum of protein homeostasis in healthy cells and the diseases that result when control of protein production, protein folding, and protein degradation goes awry. The contributors examine the physical biochemistry of protein folding and the roles of the various cellular compartments in protein quality control, as well as approaches for ameliorating protein misfolding and aggregation diseases. Including discussions of specific disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and prion diseases, this book is an essential reference for not only molecular and cellular biologists but also medical scientists wishing to understand the pathological consequences of and potential therapies for protein homeostasis deficiencies in common human diseases.

Protein Microarray

Protein Microarray

$71.7

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A protein microarray, sometimes referred to as a protein binding microarray, provides a multiplex approach to identify proteinprotein interactions, to identify the substrates of protein kinases, to identify transcription factor proteinactivation, or to identify the targets of biologically active small molecules. The array is a piece of glass on which different molecules of protein or specific DNA binding sequences (as capture probes for the proteins) have been affixed at separate locations in an ordered manner thus forming a microscopic array. The most common protein microarray is the antibody microarray, where antibodies are spotted onto the protein chip and are used as capture molecules to detect proteins from cell lysate solutions. Related microarray technologies also include DNA microarrays, cellular microarrays, antibody microarrays, tissue microarrays and chemical compound microarrays. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles XK (also known as Kell blood group precursor) is a protein found on human red blood cells and other tissues which is responsible for the Kx antigen which helps determine a persons blood type. The Kx antigen plays a role in matching blood for blood transfusions. Absence of XK protein leads to McLeod syndrome, a multisystem disorder characterized by hemolytic anemia, myopathy, acanthocytosis, and chorea. XK is located on the X chromosome and absence of the XK protein is an Xlinked disease. XK is a membrane transport protein of unknown action. Protein Toxicity

Protein Toxicity

$89.22

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Protein toxicity with proteinuria can result in those with preexisting kidney disease, or those who have lost kidney function due to age. Consuming more than 2.0 g/kg/day in protein can stress the kidney even in otherwise healthy people. The first sign of kidney problems begins with microalbuminuria, which is a marker for kidney disease. Common causes of kidney disease include diabetes, heart disease and long term untreated high blood pressure, as well as abuse of aspirin. Unexplained vomiting and a loss of appetite are indicators of protein toxicity. If those two symptoms are accompanied by an ammonia quality on the breath the onset of kidney failure is a likely culprit. People with kidney disease, who are not on dialysis, are advised to avoid consumption of protein if possible, as consuming too much accelerates the condition and can lead to death. Most of the problems stem from the accumulation of unfiltered toxins and wastes from protein metabolism. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F.
