While their mix of low-res electronics, flamboyant synth pop, and experimental rock sounds slightly more accessible than it has before, that just makes it easier for Jamie Stewart’s confrontational vocals and lyrics to sink in that much deeper. As always, Xiu Xiu juxtapose their heroic doses of misery with lovely, if rough-edged, music: the drooping synth lines and chunky beats on “Crank Heart” and “Brian Vampire” sound like the music from some unspeakably sad video game, while “Little Panda McElroy”‘s acoustic guitars have a hesitant prettiness that makes lyrics like “I can stop hating my own heart/I can do it because of you” even more intimate. Stewart either whispers obsessively or shout-sings, as if he’s trying to drown out his own thoughts, and does both on the brilliantly morose “I Luv the Valley OH!,” on which he vows, “It’s a heart that you made/And I won’t rest until I break it.” More so than with many other bands, Xiu Xiu’s music immerses the listener in the band’s world view and the songs’ characters: “Bunny Gamer” is an extraordinary portrait of yearning and self-loathing that begins as an internal monologue of an unrequited lover and then becomes a painful dialogue between him and the object of his affection, who is much more careless and carefree. The song’s dead-calm desperation borders on the creepy and pathetic, but this is the uncomfortable territory that Xiu Xiu claim as their own. Much like the musical equivalent of Todd Solondz or Harmony Korine, Xiu Xiu set out to disturb their audience in pursuit of higher artistic goals. More often than not (and arguably more often than Solondz and Korine), the group succeeds. “Support Our Troops OH!,” which graphically depicts a U.S. troop killing a young girl, could have been played for shock value, but the palpable anger that runs through the track is more implosive than strident. Similarly, “Nieces Pieces (Boat Knife Version)” explores a dysfunctional family with quiet contempt and dark humor rather than outright rage. It all culminates on “Fabulous Muscles (Mama Black Widow Version)” — its effeminately macho title is yet another one of Xiu Xiu’s dualities — a mix of sex, violence, and sadness that features the lyrics “Cremate me after you come on my lips, honey boy/Keep my ashes in a vase beneath your workout bench” and manages to be horrific, romantic, and funny at the same time. This delicate balance was thrown out of whack after the phenomenal success of 1995′s (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, when the group sunk into a pit of excess that they couldn’t completely escape for almost a full decade. When Oasis did begin to re-emerge on 2005′s Don’t Believe the Truth they sounded like journeymen, purveyors of no-frills rock & roll. All this makes the wallop of 2008′s Dig Out Your Soul all the more bracing. Colorful and dense where Don’t Believe the Truth was straightforward, Dig Out Your Soul finds Oasis reconnecting to the churning psychedelic undercurrents in their music, sounds that derive equally from mid-period Beatles and early Verve. This is heavy, murky music, as dense, brutal, and loud as Oasis has ever been, building upon the swagger of Don’t Believe and containing not a hint of the hazy drift of their late-’90s records: it’s what Be Here Now would have sounded like without the blizzard of cocaine and electronica paranoia. Dig Out Your Soul doesn’t have much arrogance, either, as Oasis’ strut has mellowed into an off-hand confidence, just like how Noel Gallagher’s hero worship has turned into a distinct signature of his own, as his Beatlesque songs sound like nobody else’s, not even the Beatles. His only real rival at this thick, surging pop is his brother Liam, who has proven a sturdy, if not especially flashy songwriter with a knack for candied Lennonesque ballads like “I’m Outta Time.” To appreciate what Liam does, turn to Gem Archer’s “To Be Where There’s Life” and Andy Bell’s “The Nature of Reality,” which are enjoyable enough Oasis-by-numbers, but Liam’s numbers resonate, getting stronger with repeated plays, as the best Oasis songs always do. But, as it always does, Oasis belongs to Noel Gallagher, who pens six of the 11 songs on Dig Out Your Soul, almost every one of them possessing the same sense of inevitability that marked his best early work. Best among these are the titanic stomp of “Waiting for the Rapture” and the quicksilver kaleidoscope of “The Shock of the Lightning,” a pair of songs that rank among his best, but the grinding blues-psych of “Bag It Up” and gently cascading “The Turning” aren’t far behind, either. These have the large, enveloping melodies so characteristic of this work and what impresses is that he can still make music that sounds not written, but unearthed. Gone as well are the orchestral arrangements and wide-screen productions. What remains on Gone Out of Your Mind is a stripped-down, storming guitar record with a decidedly stark view of the politics and morality of the day. The two centerpieces of the album are the blazing cover of Junior Byles’ “Fade Away” and “Pass By,” both of which feature desperate and searching vocals from Johnson and titanic guitar duels with him and Brett Nelson torching their respective fretboards. The rest of the album is just as desperate and raw. On the uptempo tracks like “On Track Now” and “Can’t Get It Right,” Johnson and his band, the Evildoers (including Nelson, Jim Roth of Built to Spill on bass, and Jason Albertini on drums), kick up lots of angry dust; on the ballads like “Gone Out of Your Mind” they sound positively wounded and alone. This is not a record for the faint of heart or the easily bruised. Mike Johnson is either one of the most broken men in the musical world or he is a damn fine actor. Either way, this album is a welcome return for an underrated artist who deserves some attention. This vinyl has a sticky adhesive on one side protected by a peel away release layer. This perforated material known as window perf is made by many companies around the United States. The difference between graphic companies is what they print on this material The beauty of window perf is that it is incredibly low tech comprised of 50 vinyl and 50 holes. Human eyes absorb light reflected from objects. When someone looks at the image on your window their eyes absorb the light being reflected off of the printed image. The holes cannot be seen. The graphic looks like a solid image The sticky side of the graphic which faces the glass is black. Looking out from inside the vehicle your eyes absorb light reflected off objects outside the vehicle such as buildings cars trees etc. Your eyes blend the black material on the inside with the images seen through the holes creating the illusion that there is nothing on your window.
